How will your child’s school look twenty years, ten years, or even five years from now? What knowledge will every child need as they move from kindergarten to graduation? How will instruction be delivered? These questions laid the groundwork for the 21st Century Student committee that began meeting last spring. Now the group is ready to continue their work starting January 12, 2011, at 6:30 pm in the Board Room of the Administration Building, 18700 Audette, Dearborn.
The Dearborn Public Schools, in conjunction with the Dearborn Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), the Dearborn Federation of Teachers, and the Dearborn Federation of School Employees, along with several community members, took part in a series of meetings to discuss and explore how 21st Century learning must look, operate, and educate. The previous meetings covered topics such as: what will students need to know in order to be successful graduates and how will schools utilize the tools at their disposal to properly deliver a 21st Century curriculum.
“Last year’s meetings were very productive, discussions were positive, and many creative and innovative ideas were brought forth,” commented Ms. Norma Jean Sass, Associate Superintendent for Elementary Education.
Changes that are driven by the educational needs of students will take the cooperation and input from all stakeholders in the community. The 21st Century Schools meetings will continue the discussion to determine what students must know in order to meet the demands of the future, and how our schools will look to meet those goals. Future meetings are planned for February 9, March 9, April 13, and May 11. New members to the committee are welcome.
“We are looking forward to continuing this very important work to shape our classrooms to meet the educational needs of our students so they will be prepared to continue their education beyond high school and be successful in the workplaces of the future,” Sass added.
